What sizing actually means
Every house has a specific heating and cooling load based on square footage, insulation, window area, orientation and climate. The industry-standard method for calculating that load is generally referred to as a Manual J calculation, and it is what tells a contractor what size equipment your house actually needs — not what was there before, and not a round number that feels safe.

Why oversized feels like it should be fine, and is not
An oversized system cools or heats the air fast enough to satisfy the thermostat before it has had time to do the rest of its job. On the cooling side that means the system shuts off before it has pulled meaningful humidity out of the air, leaving a house that reads cold on the thermostat but still feels clammy.
The system then short cycles — turning on and off frequently rather than running longer, steadier cycles. Every start is mechanical wear, and short cycling wears out components meaningfully faster than a properly sized system running normal cycle lengths.
Why undersized is also a problem, just a different one
An undersized system runs constantly and still cannot keep up on the hottest or coldest days, which is its own kind of failure. The goal of a proper calculation is not the biggest number that fits the budget — it is the number that actually matches the house.
How to tell if your contractor actually sized it
Ask directly whether a load calculation was performed, not just whether the new system matches what is being removed. A contractor who ran one can generally describe the inputs — square footage, insulation levels, window count — without much hesitation. A contractor who is only matching the old equipment's rated capacity is not actually sizing your system, they are copying whoever guessed last time.
The ductwork half of the equation
A correctly sized piece of equipment connected to ductwork that cannot move the air it produces will still leave rooms uneven. Sizing and duct design are two halves of the same problem, and a quote that addresses only the equipment number is addressing half the job.
Common questions
Does a bigger unit cool a house faster and better?
It cools the thermostat faster, which is not the same thing. A correctly sized system takes longer to satisfy the thermostat and, in doing so, removes more humidity — which is usually what people actually mean when they say a house feels comfortable.
Will closing vents in unused rooms help balance the house?
Generally no. Systems are balanced for the whole house as designed; closing vents raises pressure in the ducts and can push more conditioned air out through leaks elsewhere, straining the blower rather than fixing the room.
Is a Manual J calculation required by code?
Requirements vary by jurisdiction, and many areas do require it for permitted replacement work. Whether or not it is required where you live, insist on it — it is the actual basis for sizing, not a formality.
