AC running but not cooling: what is actually wrong
An AC that runs constantly but never gets the house cold is one of the most common HVAC complaints, and the cause is usually one of a short list of things. Here is how to narrow it down before anyone gets billed for a service call.
Start here — the two-minute check
Before anything else, check the thermostat setting and the air filter. A dirty filter restricts airflow badly enough on its own to cause weak cooling, and it is the single most common cause of a service call that turns out to be nothing.
Next, walk outside and look at the condenser unit. If it is covered in leaves, grass clippings or debris, it cannot reject heat properly and the whole system suffers for it.

The safe DIY checks
Filter. Replace it. This alone resolves a meaningful share of weak-cooling complaints.
Outdoor unit clearance. Clear debris and vegetation from around the condenser, and gently rinse the fins with a hose if they look caked with dirt.
Circuit breaker and disconnect. Confirm the outdoor unit's breaker has not tripped and the outdoor disconnect is fully seated.
Thermostat batteries and mode. A dying battery or a thermostat stuck in the wrong mode is a genuinely common and genuinely cheap fix.
The failure modes that need a licensed technician
Low refrigerant. This is a sealed system — refrigerant does not get used up over time. If a system is low, there is a leak, and adding refrigerant without finding and repairing the leak just delays the same call.
A frozen evaporator coil. Often caused by restricted airflow or low refrigerant, and running the system while it is frozen can damage the compressor. Shut it off and let it thaw, then call for diagnosis rather than restarting repeatedly.
A failing capacitor or contactor. These wear out and are inexpensive to replace, but the work involves live electrical components and is not a reasonable DIY repair.
Compressor issues. The most expensive component in the system to replace, and diagnosing whether it is actually failing versus a symptom of something upstream needs a trained eye.
What to tell the technician before they arrive
Note when the problem started, whether it is constant or worse at certain times of day, and whether you have already changed the filter. That handful of details often shortens the diagnosis meaningfully and gives you a way to sense-check what you are told once they are on site.
Common questions
Why does my AC blow warm air sometimes?
Often a frozen coil thawing, a refrigerant issue, or in some systems the unit briefly running in a defrost or delay cycle. If it is occasional and brief, monitor it; if it is constant, get it looked at.
How often should I change my air filter?
Every 60 to 90 days for a standard filter under normal conditions, more often with pets or during heavy pollen seasons. It is the cheapest maintenance step that exists and it is routinely skipped.
Is it normal for the outdoor unit to ice up?
No. Ice on the outdoor unit or the refrigerant lines usually points to low refrigerant or restricted airflow indoors. Turn the system off, let it thaw fully, and have it diagnosed before running it again.
